A Tragic Reminder of the Dangers of Texting and Driving
Courtney Ann Sanford, a 34-year-old woman known by friends and family as a confident and capable driver, lost her life in a devastating car accident.
Moments before the crash, she decided to post on social media while driving. She was listening to Pharrell Williams’ hit song “Happy” and took a selfie behind the wheel. Along with the photo, she wrote the caption: “This song makes me happy!”
Less than a minute after sharing that post, her car, reportedly traveling at around 60 kilometers per hour, collided with a truck. The impact forced her vehicle off the road, into a ditch, and then into a tree. The crash was so severe that her car burst into flames. Tragically, Courtney was trapped inside and was unable to escape.
When authorities notified her family, they later discovered that her final Facebook update lined up almost exactly with the time of the collision. According to law enforcement, her post was published at 8:33 a.m. The emergency services received the 911 call just one minute later, at 8:34 a.m.
This heartbreaking story is a powerful warning about distracted driving. When you text, take selfies, or post on social media behind the wheel, you are not only risking your own life—you are also endangering your passengers, pedestrians, and everyone else on the road.
