I always threw away the oil plug: a colleague told me what it was really needed for …

How to Actually Use That Annoying Oil Bottle Plug

I used to be endlessly annoyed by that plastic plug in oil bottles. Sometimes you have to yank it out with so much force that the oil splashes everywhere. Other times, the ring breaks off, and then getting to the oil becomes a real struggle.

Only recently did I discover what that plug is really for—and it completely changed the way I use it.

The Real Purpose of the Plug

The plug isn’t meant to be thrown away. After opening the bottle, you’re supposed to put it back in, but in a different position.

I always threw away the oil plug: a colleague told me what it was really needed for …

Here’s what to do:

  1. Remove the plug from the bottle as usual.
  2. Flip it upside down.
  3. Insert it back into the bottle neck, pressing it in so it locks into place between the inner grooves.

Because the plug is asymmetrical, it never seals perfectly when inserted this way. Instead, it leaves a small gap.

Why That Gap Matters

That tiny opening is intentional. It allows the oil to:

  • Flow out in a thin, controlled stream
  • Be poured more precisely without splashing
  • Help you measure and dose the oil more accurately

So instead of fighting with the plug or throwing it away, you can use it as a simple built-in oil flow regulator.
