Savory Stuffed Fried Bread
Ingredients
- 1 large egg
- 200 ml warm milk
- 200 ml warm water
- 10 g active dry yeast
- 20 g granulated sugar
- 8 g salt
- 540 g all-purpose flour
- 1 potato, peeled and finely diced
- 1 red bell pepper, finely diced
- 2 green peppers, finely diced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- A small handful of fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 80 g Tulum cheese (or another crumbly cheese), crumbled
- 400 ml vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
1. Make the Dough
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and dry yeast. Stir and let rest for 5–10 minutes, until the mixture becomes foamy.
- Add the warm milk, egg, and salt, and mix until well combined.
- Gradually add the flour, stirring or mixing until you get a soft, smooth dough that is no longer sticky.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5–7 minutes, until elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
2. Prepare the Filling
- Boil the diced potato in salted water until tender, then drain well.
- In a pan, heat a little oil and sauté the chopped onion and peppers until softened and fragrant.
- Combine the cooked potato, sautéed vegetables, parsley, and crumbled cheese in a bowl. Stir gently to mix, then set aside to cool completely.
3. Shape the Breads
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air.
- Divide the dough into small, evenly sized pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a small circle.
- Spoon some of the filling into the center of each circle.
- Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape, then press the edges firmly to seal. You can crimp with your fingers or a fork to secure.
4. Fry
- Heat the oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
- When the oil is hot, carefully add the stuffed breads in batches, taking care not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry until they are golden brown on both sides, turning as needed.
- Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
