Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

Make the Cake

  1. Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8-inch square baking pan and set aside.

  2. Mix dry ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda until evenly combined.

  3. Combine wet ingredients
In a separate bowl or large measuring cup, stir together the vanilla extract, white vinegar, vegetable oil, and water.

  4. Make the batter
Pour the wet mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir until the batter is smooth and no dry pockets or lumps remain.

  5. Bake the cake
Transfer the batter to the prepared 8×8-inch pan, spreading it into an even layer.
Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.

  6. Cool completely
Remove the cake from the oven and place the pan on a wire rack. Allow the cake to cool completely before adding the frosting.

Make the Cocoa Frosting

  1. Melt the butter
In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter.
Alternatively, melt it in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave in short bursts.

  2. Add cocoa powder
Stir the unsweetened cocoa powder into the melted butter. Mix until it forms a thick, smooth paste.

  3. Beat the frosting
Transfer the chocolate mixture to a medium mixing bowl. With a mixer on low speed, gradually add the powdered sugar, milk (or cream), and vanilla extract.

  4. Whip until creamy
Once everything is incorporated, increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for about 5 minutes, or until the frosting becomes fluffy, smooth, and spreadable.

  5. Frost the cake
Spread the frosting evenly over the completely cooled cake, smoothing it to the edges.

Slice, serve, and enjoy your homemade chocolate cake with cocoa frosting!
