This simple chocolate cake is moist, rich, and topped with a silky cocoa frosting. It’s made in just one bowl and uses basic pantry ingredients—perfect for a quick dessert.
Ingredients
For the Cake
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup water
For the Frosting
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk (or heavy cream)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Make the Cake
-
Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8-inch square baking pan and set aside. -
Mix dry ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda until evenly combined.
-
Combine wet ingredients
In a separate bowl or large measuring cup, stir together the vanilla extract, white vinegar, vegetable oil, and water. -
Make the batter
Pour the wet mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir until the batter is smooth and no dry pockets or lumps remain. -
Bake the cake
Transfer the batter to the prepared 8×8-inch pan, spreading it into an even layer.
Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs. -
Cool completely
Remove the cake from the oven and place the pan on a wire rack. Allow the cake to cool completely before adding the frosting.
Make the Cocoa Frosting
-
Melt the butter
In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter.
Alternatively, melt it in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave in short bursts. -
Add cocoa powder
Stir the unsweetened cocoa powder into the melted butter. Mix until it forms a thick, smooth paste. -
Beat the frosting
Transfer the chocolate mixture to a medium mixing bowl. With a mixer on low speed, gradually add the powdered sugar, milk (or cream), and vanilla extract. -
Whip until creamy
Once everything is incorporated, increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for about 5 minutes, or until the frosting becomes fluffy, smooth, and spreadable. -
Frost the cake
Spread the frosting evenly over the completely cooled cake, smoothing it to the edges.
Slice, serve, and enjoy your homemade chocolate cake with cocoa frosting!
