Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry Pinwheels Recipe
A simple, crowd-pleasing appetizer made with flaky puff pastry, savory ham, and melted cheese. Perfect for parties, snacks, or brunch.
Ingredients
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed if frozen
- 6–8 slices of thinly sliced ham
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a combination)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional, for added flavor)
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning or dried parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
2. Prepare the puff pastry
- Lightly flour your work surface.
- Unroll or roll out the puff pastry sheet into a rectangle, smoothing it into an even thickness.
3. Add the fillings
- If you’re using Dijon mustard, spread a thin, even layer over the entire surface of the pastry.
- Arrange the ham slices evenly on top, covering the pastry.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the ham.
4. Roll the pastry
- Starting from one of the long sides, roll the pastry up tightly into a log.
- Gently pinch or press along the seam to seal the edge so it doesn’t open while baking.
5. Chill the roll
- Transfer the pastry log to the refrigerator.
- Chill for 10–15 minutes to firm it up; this helps you slice clean, neat pinwheels.
6. Slice into pinwheels
- Using a sharp knife, cut the chilled log into slices about 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) thick.
- Try to keep the slices even so they bake uniformly.
7. Prepare for baking
- Lay the slices flat on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each pinwheel so they can puff up.
- Beat the egg in a small bowl.
- Brush the tops of the pinwheels with the egg wash.
- If desired, sprinkle a pinch of Italian seasoning or dried parsley over each piece for extra flavor and color.
8. Bake
- Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven.
- Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the pinwheels are golden brown, puffed, and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
9. Serve
- Allow the pinwheels to cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet.
- Serve warm or at room temperature as an appetizer, snack, or party finger food.
These Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry Pinwheels are quick to make, wonderfully flaky, and irresistibly cheesy—ideal for any occasion.
